Thomas Wallcut papers, 1671-1866.

Papers of Thomas Wallcut, Boston antiquarian, copier of documents, and writer, contain his personal account book (1834-40); diary of a trip to Marietta, Ohio (1790); and Wallcut family genealogy and correspondence. Also included are notes, essays, and drafts of articles and miscellaneous historical documents on numerous subjects, among them New England state boundaries, statistics, legislative districts, and place names (in particular in Sandwich, Mass.); plants of Mass. (in particular Nantucket); Indians of New England; a chronological calendar of U.S. history; and Massachusetts colonial history (in particular Sandwich and Nantucket).

Thomas Wallcut (1758-1840), son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Marshall Wallcut, was educated to become an Indian missionary at the Indian Charity School in Hanover, N.H. In 1774, he passed the exams for Dartmouth College, but instead went to live with the St. Francis Indians near Montreal. During the Revolution, he worked in hospitals at Albany and Boston.
